Mapping the entire human proteome remains problematic, but interest continues to be high in tackling meaningful chunks of the proteome. The latest group to throw its hat into the ring includes three German startups and nine academic groups, which have launched a joint project to develop a technology platform to study the proteome of the human brain.

The effort is funded by the German Federal Research Ministry (BMBF) with DM20.5 million ($9.3 million) over the next three years within the framework of a program called "Development of Platform Technologies for Functional Proteome Analysis." The academic groups are based in Berlin, Braunschweig, Kiel, and Bochum. The three commercial enterprises are MicroDiscovery GmbH (Berlin), Protagen AG (Bochum), and Scienion AG (Berlin).
