Energy BioSystems Corp. has been quietly using its gene shuffling technology to enhance the efficacy of enzymes to desulfurize petrochemicals. The company now believes its directed evolution technology can be adapted to use in pharmaceuticals and agriculture, where it would compete with Diversa Corp., Maxygen Inc. and Applied Molecular Evolution Inc.

"Gene shuffling is flexible enough not to just be used in biodesulfurization genes. Now we can adapt it for any field," said Paul Brown, CFO at ENBC (The Woodlands, Texas).
