Companies with enabling technologies may have few opportunities to tout
their wares, as researchers tend to report on their own results rather than on the
underlying work that made their experiments possible. Thus when Stanford University
scientists recently demonstrated the role of certain chemokines in inflammatory processes,
the fact that the chemokines they used were chemically synthesized by Gryphon Sciences.
Nevertheless, the company said that the research demonstrates how its
technology can speed biological discoveries by taking gene sequences and translating them
directly to functional proteins. Indeed, the company believes the technique can replace
the production of many proteins in cell culture systems.
