At least nine antibacterial compounds are in Phase III
trials, but none of the 10 studies of those compounds target the most urgently
needed indications: hospital-acquired or ventilator-associated pneumonia
(HABP/VABP) and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP). All the studies
include trial sites in the U.S., with the exception of trials for tuberculosis
and travelers' diarrhea, which are indications uncommon in the West, and nine
of the 10 programs have some exclusion criteria on prior antibiotic use.
