New guidelines on cholesterol levels issued by the NIH's National
Cholesterol Education Program will increase the number of people in the U.S.
considered to have high cholesterol from about 52 million to 65 million and
the number of patients that should be prescribed statins from 13 to 36 million,
effectively tripling the market.
The guidelines issued earlier this month identify elevated
LDL cholesterol as the primary target of cholesterol-lowering therapy
