WASHINGTON - The intense media coverage of the recall of Kraft Foods' Taco Bell brand taco shells containing traces of StarLink Bt corn seems almost certain to lead swiftly to new FDA regulations on ag biotech.

Although StarLink corn was not approved for human consumption, its presence in food products does not pose a threat to human health, according to the FDA. And despite a report released last week by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that strongly endorsed Bt crops, coverage of the first recall of a biotech plant product in the U.S. over-shadowed such crops' safety as well as their environmental and economic benefits.
