Genetic testing regulation

WASHINGTON - A national task force on genetic testing will publish draft recommendations in January that will include the suggestion that the Secretary of Health and Human Services establish and implement a regulatory regime for genetic testing.

The recommendation will not specifically mention FDA because members of the joint National Institutes of Health/Department of Energy Task Force on Genetic Testing cannot agree on whether it is the appropriate agency to regulate genetic tests, and because the agency is very reluctant to take on the responsibility. The 15-member task force has been meeting for 1-1/2 years.
