FDA pressed on labeling of milk

WASHINGTON - Market introduction of milk from cows treated with Monsanto Co.'s recombinant bovine growth hormone on Friday caused a flurry of activity, including a promise by the FDA to issue guidance for voluntary labeling of milk.

The FDA is reviewing the voluntary labeling issue and plans to issue guidance, but cannot provide any details yet, said spokesperson Susan Cruzan. The guidance was prompted by questions from regulators, producers and consumers, including a Nov. 23 letter sent to FDA Commissioner David Kessler by Senators Russell Feingold and Herb Kohl and Rep.
