What the next FDA commissioner - whoever that is - is walking into

Margaret Hamburg is stepping down as FDA commissioner at the beginning of the quinquennial user fee reauthorization negotiations and in the midst of congressional efforts to restructure the regulatory and economic frameworks for drug development.

Duke University physician-researcher Robert Califf is her logical successor. He joins FDA this month as deputy commissioner for medical products and tobacco.
