Two laws recently enacted in Massachusetts reflect the contradictory attitudes of the state’s political leaders toward life sciences companies. According to the drug industry, whether the state will remain a good place for one of the world’s largest biopharmaceutical clusters will depend on how one of the new laws is put into practice.

On the plus side, the Life Sciences Initiative (LSI), signed into law on June 16, could pump $1 billion into the state’s biomedical community over a decade through grants, loans and tax breaks.
