The French government has announced plans to cut the prices of certain drugs to reduce the debt of France's generous but ailing social security system.

As an alternative, the direction générale de la santé (DGS), part of the French Ministry of Health, had recommended that government discontinue reimbursement for certain "inefficacious" drugs, but the government dropped this politically unpopular idea last week, leaving the pricing cutting plan that was announced earlier this month.
