Therapeutic Cloning

Beating the immune response

While proponents and opponents of therapeutic cloning debate the ethics of the technology, from a scientific point of view the question is what advantages therapeutic cloning has over stem cells to develop treatments for degenerative diseases, and what kinds of treatment options might be lost if the technology were banned.

In this context, the primary argument for therapeutic cloning is its potential for creating treatments that are not rejected by the patient's immune system. By contrast, stem cell therapies using heterologous transplant tissue raise the threat of immunogenicity.
