WASHINGTON - NIH Director Harold Varmus is soliciting cooperation and assistance from the private sector, especially the pharmaceutical industry, and philanthropic organizations to bolster the government's clinical research efforts. Varmus recently met with representatives of large pharmaceutical companies to discuss proposals for industry to finance the training of clinical researchers at NIH
Varmus also is considering an advisory committee's proposal to expand NIH's interactions with industry by opening its clinical centers to qualified researchers who are conducting trials that are not supported by NIH. The recommendation is included in an interim report of the NIH Director's Panel On Clinical Research.
