Arrogance and ignorance

Some years ago BioCentury's publisher was in the audience to hear a dinner speech by a leading genomics researcher. As we recall, the theme of the speech was "Survival of the Smartest" and in effect warned that the advancement of knowledge would be imperiled by the forces of ignorance.

We also recall being put off by the speech, thinking it arrogant and disrespectful - the rantings of the isolated elite at its worst...
