More gene patenting foes emerge

A group describing itself as a coalition of "indigenous, consumer, environmental and development non-governmental organizations" met earlier this month in the Adirondack Mountains and adopted a declaration opposing the patenting of genes.

The group developed its policies independently from the religious coalition organized by Jeremey Rifkin's Foundation on Economic Trends, and the United Methodist Church, according to Richard Schweiger, a spokesperson for the Community Nutrition Institute in Washington.
