A cold day in . . .

For all those members of the business and investment community who often have muttered, "I'll get involved in politics when hell freezes over" - the time is nigh. Unless the weather reports proved wrong over the weekend, Washington will be thawed out sufficiently to resume tinkering with health care, beginning with the State of the Union address on Tuesday. The hot air alone should make the capital very toasty.

For the legislative players, there aren't too many serious choices. One is to cobble together an even bigger Rube Goldberg contraption based on the Clinton health care plan. Another is to create an alternative plan, which might reject the excesses of the White House proposal but stay true to the mantra of a government-led program of health care management. ...
