Sen. John Chafee, architect of a Republican alternative to the Clinton health care plan, last week exhorted an assembly of biotech CEOs to confront the specter of price controls head on. According to Genentech CEO G. Kirk Raab, the Rhode Island lawmaker advised the executives to "be aggressive in communicating to the members of Congress the damage that price controls could do to this vital American asset."

In Raab's words, Chafee told the CEOs to focus on price controls "like a rifle shot." ...
