Lawmakers move on fetal tissue

WASHINGTON - Among the first Senate bills introduced last week was the National Institutes of Health Reauthorization Act, which among other things authorizes more than $3.5 billion for disease research and directs the Department of Health and Human Services to support research into the use of fetal tissue.

A Senate panel Tuesday approved NIH guidelines for fetal tissue research, which President Clinton legalized last week through an executive order overturning the Reagan-Bush administrations' ban on federally funded research using fetal tissue from abortions. ...
