At least 10 profitable biotechs and pharmas reported earnings last week. Four companies - Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT), Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGN), Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (NYSE:BMY) and Novartis AG (NYSE:NVS; SIX:NOVN) - lost $4.5 billion in aggregate market value on the week after missing the Street's EPS or revenue estimates. Amgen also announced last Thursday that it plans to acquire cancer antibody company Micromet Inc. (NASDAQ:MITI) for about $1.2 billion (see "Amgen Swallows BiTEs," A5).
