Europe acts precautionarily

OXFORD - European regulators were quick off the mark after publication of a Cornell University laboratory study in Nature last week showing that Bt corn pollen could harm monarch butterfly larvae.

Thus while the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said it would wait for evidence of actual effects in the field, as well as measuring risks and benefits, before acting (see A3), the European Commission announced that it was putting on ice an approval application for a Bt corn from Pioneer Hi-Bred International.
