Food companies wait in the wings

While companies have been adding traits to crop plants on the input side (e.g., disease and insect resistance or herbicide tolerance) for years, they are only beginning to define what kinds of traits can be added to crops to increase their downstream commercial value.

This as yet ill-defined market is attracting the attention of major food producers such as Nestle and Kellogg, but their eventual role remains unclear.
