Reflecting the emerging schisms in the international debate on human cloning, U.K. authorities have established that the cloning of human embryos in therapeutic research is protected by British law, while U.S. industry lobbyists are mobilizing to blunt growing efforts by members of Congress to enact legislation banning cloning and embryo research.

Last week, two U.K. government advisory bodies acknowledged that anyone wishing to create human embryo clones for medical research would be able to do so under existing British legislation, although reproductive cloning of individuals is illegal and is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future.
