Karen Bernstein, Ph.D.
Co-Founder, Chairman & Editor-in-Chief
Karen has been writing and publishing on biotechnology since 1987. She holds a Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University, and a B.A. in politics and history from Brandeis University, where she now is a member of the Brandeis University Science Advisory Council. She also is on the board of trustees of the Keck Graduate Institute. In 1996, Karen and Co-Founder, President & CEO David Flores were honored with the Special Recognition Award given by the annual gathering of biotechnology chief executive officers at The Biotech Meeting in Laguna Niguel, California, citing BioCentury's ongoing contributions to the industry. In 2005, The Biotech Meeting CEOs inducted Karen into their Hall of Fame, citing her lifetime contribution to the biotech community. In 2007, Karen received a Special Recognition award at the American Liver Foundation's Salute to Excellence, honoring individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to biotechnology and medical innovation.
David Flores Co-Founder, President & CEO 
David has devoted more than 20 years developing information products for biotechnology executives and investors. He is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and holds an MBA from Stanford University. David is a member of the Advisory Board of the Innovation and New Ventures Office (INVO) at Northwestern University and a member of the Advisory Council of the Keck Graduate Institute of the Applied Life Sciences. David also has served as a member of the Stanford Graduate School of Business Management Board. In 1996, David and BioCentury Co-Founder, Chairman & Editor-in-Chief Karen Bernstein were honored with the Special Recognition Award given by the annual gathering of biotechnology chief executive officers in Laguna Niguel, California, citing BioCentury's ongoing contributions to the industry.
Eric Pierce Publisher
Eric joined
BioCentury in 1993 as its first Staff Writer, and became its chief financial
writer in 1996, when he originated "Ebb & Flow," BioCentury's
weekly capital markets column. As Senior Editor for News, Eric managed
BioCentury's news operations until 2004, when he joined the management
team as Associate Publisher. He now is responsible for BioCentury's conferences,
business services and marketing. Eric has an AB in Communication from
Stanford University and completed graduate studies at the Mass Media Institute at Stanford, with an emphasis on broadcast journalism.
Tim Tulloch Associate Publisher
Tim joined
BioCentury in 1995 as Manager of Subscriber Services, and has served
as Senior Director of Subscriber Services and as General Manager
responsible for Operations. As Associate Publisher, Tim is responsible
for Subscription Services, Customer Service and Data Product Management.
Tim holds a BA in Advertising from Menlo College.
Steve Usdin Senior Editor, Washington
The original
Washington Editor of BioCentury, Steve has spent the past 15 years covering
political and policy issues affecting the life sciences sector in Washington.
He also is the Senior Editor responsible for coverage of social issues
involving biotechnology. Steve’s reporting about biotechnology and
biomedical policy have been cited in The Economist, The Wall Street Journal,
the Washington Post, New Scientist and other publications. He also has
traveled and reported extensively on the intersection of science, technology
and policy, as well as on intelligence and national security issues, in
Japan, Russia and the former Soviet Union, India, China and Western Europe.
His book, “Engineering Communism: How Two Americans Spied for Stalin
and Founded the Soviet Silicon Valley,” was published in 2005 by
Yale University Press.
Mike Ward Senior Editor, Europe
Based in the
U.K., Mike has been a commentator and analyst of the biotech industry
for more than 20 years. After first joining BioCentury in 1997, Mike moved
into the investment banking community in 2000 and was a sellside analyst
for two investment banks. In 2002 he co-founded the business intelligence
group Critical I Ltd. He rejoined BioCentury in 2005. In 2006, Mike was
shortlisted by Nature Biotechnology in its 10th anniversary issue for
making a significant contribution to biotech in the past 10 years. Mike,
who graduated in biochemistry and chemistry from the University of London,
formerly was Editor of both European Chemical News and Performance Chemicals.
Bennet Weintraub Finance Director
Bennet, who joined BioCentury in 2004, has had an extensive career as a senior
financial executive for development stage biotechnology and technology companies,
having taken two companies public, and having completed numerous equity and debt
financings and M&A transactions. He was the CFO at InterMune Inc., Valentis Inc., and
Technology Modeling Associates, and held senior financial positions at Metra Biosystems
and Advanced Polymer Systems. Bennet received his BA in Mathematical Economics from
Pomona College and earned his MBA from Harvard University.
